Fashion designer Abi Ferrin became a designer the moment she unintentionally blurted out, “I’m a designer.” At an “industry” party at the ever-trendy Kitson Boutique in Hollywood one night, Abi changed her destiny. That evening, Abi donned one of her very first designs and Extra’s host Dayna Devon noticed. The small screen darling made a beeline for Abi and exclaimed, “Where did you get that top? I love it!” Abi smiled and without thinking, announced, “I made it. I’m a designer.”And, there it was. Dayna Devon said she had to have it. In no time, Abi quit her sales job at a major studio and became a designer. Next, her clothes were featured onExtra, splashed all over the weekly magazines, and celebs like Molly Sims and Rosalyn Sanchez were calling Abi with personal requests.
The bright lights of tinsel town shined down on its newest star and everyone wanted the latest looks from Miss Abi Ferrin. A dream-come-true right? Wrong.Abi Ferrin knew better. LA, famous for making you hot and then claiming you’re not, was not about to get the best of Abi…not yet. The young designer packed up and headed east…No, not to fashion capital NYC. Abi Ferrin had designs on
Dallas, Texas.
Deep in the heart of Texas, Abi could focus more on being innovative rather than just “in.” Long story short, Abi Ferrin did a little more than focus…she flew. Within a year, Abi was namedTexas’ Next Top Designer by Stanley Korshak and the Dallas Fashion Incubator in 2007. Abi won a pretty prize package valued at $25,000—including a loft with storefront space on Lamar for one year and a business grant to expand her growing company—come on, everything’s bigger in Texas remember?
Over the last year, Abi has taken the fashion world by storm. Her collection features form flattering dresses, tops, skirts, pants, and jackets all made using the finest fabrications. It doesn’t stop there. Abi’s motto, Fashion with Freedom and Purpose,is the driving force behind her brand. Abi Ferrin empowers and employs women rescued from the sex trade in Nepal by incorporating their hand-made buttons into her designs. Abi Ferrin purchases the buttons at fair market value; thendonates an additional 600% of the asking price back to the organization.
While literally changing the world one outfit at a time, Abi Ferrin is redefining the meaning of “fashion designer.” Call her a freedom fighter. Call her a trend-maker. Call her the next big thing. Abi Ferrin will continue to smile and call herself a “designer.”
